Review of the day

Day 1 of the festival ended with things about level…

That was thanks to an impressive victory from Tully East in the finale.
He cruised through the race – pinged the last – and sprinted up the run in.
It was quite a performance…

In fairness, it had been pretty much matched, by Singlefarmpayment earlier in the afternoon.
He also cruised through his race – pinged the last – and sprinted up the run in.
The trouble was, Un Temps pour Tout sprinted just a little bit faster…

That was a hard defeat to take - particularly after so many similar ones throughout the season.

At least Tully Easts victory redressed the balance, a little…

I only tipped in one other race on the day – and managed to getting a placing there as well (though unfortunately, the tip was win only !)

Arpege D’Alene ran an honest race to finish fourth in the 4 miler, staying on stoutly at the end.
Unfortunately, he was no match for Tiger Roll.
He wasn’t an easy one to fancy – but stormed up the hill to give Gordon Elliot his third winner on the day.

Elliot had earlier taken the opener – with an equally enigmatic performer, in the shape of Labaik.
He’d not been keen to start on 5 of his last 6 runs – so it would have taken an act of faith to support him this afternoon.

Elliot’s other winner on the card, was Apples Jade, in the mares hurdle.
She got the better of the 2 Willie Mullins/Rich Ricci runners – with the ‘big 3’, finishing well clear of the remainder.

The Champion hurdle was won by Buveur D’air.
I suspected it would be one of the 6 years olds that took the race – I just couldn’t decide on which one.

The quick ground swung me towards Brain Power – but Buveur D’air had no issue with conditions and was an impressive winner.

Altior wasn’t quite so impressive in the Arkle - but he won comfortably enough.
I suspect that would have been the case even if Charbel hadn’t fallen at the second last.
With him out the way, Cloudy Dream stayed on well to finish a creditable second – rewarding those of you who were able to back him each way (and also those of us who backed him without the favourite in the race !).

TVB.
