The
Surrey National turned in to a war of attrition and Onderun wasn’t up to the
job.
It
was a bizarre race to watch, as there were horses under pressure after just 3
fences ! The first 5 at that point, remained the first 5 for the entire
race.
Unfortunately, Onderun was fifth then – and that was
where he stayed, as nothing could get to the front running Coolking.
It
all seemed just a bit too much for Onderun - which was a shame…
It
was also a shame that Hartside couldn’t give the Mentions a win on the
day.
Victory looked assured when he went a couple of lengths
clear inside the final furlong.
However the ground was softer than forecast, and it found
him out up the hill.
In
similar fashion to Flintham on Saturday, he was collared close home for another
agonising defeat.
£37K
was matched on him on BF, at 1.01 – which gives some idea of how likely he
looked to win !
I
don’t think the soft ground helped The Cobbler Swayne in the next race – but it
certainly helped Kap Jazz.
He
was backed as if defeat was out the question – and travelled like a horse at
least a stone ahead of his mark.
Finally, Top Wood was just disappointing in the handicap
chase.
That
said, he ran so badly you have to wonder if maybe something wasn’t quite right
with him.
In
another race full of drama, Carrigdhun took advantage of the final fence fall of
Culthram Abbey, to record what had appeared to be a very unlikely
win.
I
think we could do with a bit of luck like that..!
