Well
that showed Sods Law !
Over
the years, the one thing I’ve learnt about the racing, is that you need to be
consistent.
Consistent with the picking; consistent with the tipping
and consistent with the backing.
If you’re not, you know precisely what will happen…
If you’re not, you know precisely what will happen…
I
could easily have taken today off – but I saw a horse who I felt had got a
decent chance at a fair price, so I made the effort to tip him (and write down
my reasons for doing so).
And
thankfully, he came up trumps – even if it was only by the skin of his teeth
!
As
recently as Friday, we were deprived a winner because his jumping fell apart in
the closing stages of the race: today we got one, because the same thing
happened to our main rival.
To
be honest, I’ll take that.
I
accept that some days things go your way – and others they don’t.
So
long as you get a fair balance between the 2, I will never have an
issue…
There’s not a lot else to say about the race.
Westerner Point led from start to finish – and just
managed to fend off the late challenge of favourite Riviera Sun.
It
was pretty much as I’d scripted.
Dysios even ran the race he was supposed to.
If
only it always worked out that way…
Earlier in the afternoon, Royal Palladium was a game
winner at Exeter.
He
was on my short list of 4 for the race – but I couldn’t be interested in him at
the early 6/1.
10/1
at the off (bigger on BF) was much more interesting – and again, whilst he was
maybe a tad fortunate to collect (his main rival ploughed through the second
last), he was in front where it mattered.
It’s
interesting to observe the betting on Venetias horses.
They are all being put in very short – so most of them will drift (obviously Saroque didn’t yesterday – but he has absolutely rock solid, in terms of the form book).

Backing them at BSP isn’t a bad idea – as both Francis
and Neil have hinted, in the forum…
The
next race on the card was the novice chase - and it was won by one of the
chasing debutantes, American.
It was good performance – though not one to go overboard about.

The
final race of interest on the Exeter card, was won by Walk in the
Mill.
My
process of elimination had arrived at him –I just didn’t like the price.
I stand by that – even after the event !!

Things didn’t go quite so well at Uttoxeter…
I
felt Elenika had a better chance than Royal Palladium – but their runs were like
chalk and cheese.
Elenika never travelled and was pulled up not long after
half way.
If
you are going to follow Venetia horses, you have to be prepared to accept such
things…
In
the same race, Mercian Prince was very well backed - and looked likely to
win.
But he was run out of it close home, which as a shame…

In
the other race of interest at Uttoxeter, it was as if Little Glenshee and Grove
Silver had swapped roles (and I guess they might have done, as both are greys
!).
The
latter was meant to get into a pace duel with Noble Legend – but he left that
job to Little Glenshee.
She gleefully accepted – and along with Noble Legend, was a spent force not long after half way.

This
left Grove Silver and Mumgos Debut to fight out the finish – and Grove Silver
came out on top.
Another thing I’ve learnt over the years, is that when
you feel sure you know how a small runner race is going to be run, you are
invariably wrong !!
Finally, at Punchestown, Nichols Canyon won the Morgiana;
whilst Identity Thief won the Craddockstown.
In
the Florida Pearl, Jetstream Jack beat Disco – but A Toi Phil beat them
both.
JP
didn’t fancy any of his runners - and the message got through to them all,
without any issue.
First to Boogies however, was very well fancied. You
don’t see many 6/4 shots in 17 runners handicaps.
Needless to say, he came home in front.
It’s
easy when you are in the know…
TVB.
